Following our previous topic on road safety on Kenyan roads, we sat down at CARS360 and pondered on the top 10 safest cars in Kenya. To ensure road safety, it only makes sense that the cars we drive play a key role in shaping a zero-fatality future.

So, what are the safest cars for sale in Kenya, and how exactly do we determine their safety?

Lucky for us, there are world-renowned institutions that specifically handle vehicle crash testing, and luckier so, they rate these cars, on a scale of 1-star to 5-stars (1 being appalling, 5 being excellent), during a crash.

The institutions in question are the IIHS (Insurance Institute of Highway Safety) located in the United States of America (USA), and the EURO NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program) located in Belgium.

These institutions test and rate new cars based on two safety aspects: Crashworthiness (how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash) and Crash Avoidance & Mitigation (technology within the car that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity). All these translate to the car’s body rigidity and stiffness, crumple zones, energy absorption, airbag deployment, safety belts, driver-assist technologies such as Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Forward-collision warning and Automatic emergency braking, Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, Blind-spot monitors, Rear cross-traffic alert, Adaptive LED headlights, Adaptive cruise control, etc.

The cars we selected as the safest were all awarded with 5-Star safety ratings, with some getting the coveted ‘Top Safety Pick+’ award by IIHS. This basically means these are as safe as lying in a hammock, at the beach, on a bright Sunday morning, sipping lemonade, as you have the Peer Gynt Suite No.1 play ‘Grieg – Morning Mood’ in the background.

Yes! They are that good.
