Are Electric Vehicles (Evs) The Future?

Climate change continues to pose an increasing threat to global socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. One of the leading factors contributing to this is greenhouse gas emissions from gasoline-powered vehicles.

To combat this there has been an observable wave with major corporations in the country , and the world, defining environmental and economic sustainability plans to mitigate climate change. How? You may ask – by adopting Electric powered vehicles.

Is the EV revolution with us already?

With established parastatals such as Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) unveiling electric Vehicles and planning to install over 30 EV charging stations across the country, this year, there must be a catch!

Notably, two leading automakers – Ford and General Motors announced plans to sell electric vehicles (EVs) ONLY by 2030  and 2035 respectively.

Countries such as France, England, Norway, India, China and the United States of America are looking to phase out gasoline and petrol cars. In China alone, the country’s main target is to hit a 7 million EV sales mark by 2025, and a record 15 million in unit sales by 2030.

The introduction of Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt in 2010 symbolized the onset of mass EV Market. This wave hit the automotive market, with top vehicle manufacturers now opting for all-electric vehicles such as the 2023 Mazda MX-30 EV GS. Mercedes Benz EQS, Peugeot E-2008 and of course, the Tesla Model Y.

It is currently estimated that there are about 350 electric vehicles (EVs) registered in Kenya, with firms such as BasiGo and Roam piloting electric buses in the country. The government aims to expand EV ownership to 5% of all registered vehicles in Kenya by 2025.

With the country’s inflation and high cost of fuel, most first-time car owners will definitely opt for Electric Vehicles.

Are we staring right at the future?
